How to use this tool

Useful when you are setting a price for a new download, reviewing an existing one, or checking what a sale is really worth after fees. You need your selling price and the fees your platform charges; other costs and advertising are optional.

  1. Enter your selling price and choose the currency you sell in.
  2. Add your percentage fees. Look up the current rates on your platform's own fee page. If your platform charges one combined percentage, put it in the platform fee field and set processing to 0.
  3. Add any fixed amounts charged on every sale, such as a flat transaction or listing fee, plus any other costs or advertising spend per sale.
  4. Set the number of sales to see totals for a month, a launch or any period you choose.

How the profit is calculated

Percentage fees are worked out on the selling price. Fixed amounts are added once per sale. Nothing is counted twice.

Percentage fees = price × (platform % + processing %) ÷ 100
Total costs = percentage fees + fixed fee + other costs + advertising
Profit per sale = price − total costs
Profit margin = profit per sale ÷ price × 100
Total profit = profit per sale × number of sales

Fees vary. Marketplace and payment fees change over time and differ by country, payment method, currency conversion and account type. This calculator does not include any built in platform rates. You enter the fees that apply to you, and you are responsible for checking they are correct.

What the result includes and leaves out

  • Included: percentage fees, a fixed fee per sale, other costs per sale and advertising per sale, all as you enter them.
  • Left out: VAT, sales tax and income tax, refunds, currency conversion fees, monthly costs such as software subscriptions, and the time you spend making the product.
  • Per sale and totals: every per sale figure is multiplied by the number of sales to give the totals. Each line is rounded to the penny for display, so the rows can differ from the total by a penny.

Worked example

These are the example values the calculator starts with. They are illustrations, not any platform's real fees.

  • A printable planner sells for £6.50.
  • Platform fee of 6.5% is £0.42, and payment processing of 4% is £0.26.
  • A fixed fee of £0.20 brings total costs to £0.88 per sale.
  • Estimated profit is £6.50 minus £0.88, which is £5.62 per sale, a margin of 86.4%.
  • Over 50 sales that is £325.00 of revenue and £280.88 of estimated profit.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put in the fixed transaction fee?

Any flat amount you pay on every order regardless of price. Some platforms charge a fixed payment processing fee or a per-listing fee each time an item sells. If you pay nothing fixed, leave it at 0.

Does this include VAT or income tax?

No. The calculator shows profit before income tax. If you charge VAT or sales tax, enter the price excluding that tax, because the tax is passed on rather than kept. Speak to an accountant or your tax authority about what applies to you.

Why is my margin so high for a digital product?

Digital downloads have no printing or postage, so the cost of each extra sale is mostly fees. A high margin per sale does not mean a business is profitable overall: your time, software subscriptions and design assets are real costs too, they are just not per sale.

Should I include my software subscriptions?

Not here. Monthly costs such as design software are not linked to a single sale. Compare them against your total estimated profit instead, or use the Sales Goal Calculator with a profit target that covers them.

Is the result guaranteed?

No. It is an estimate based on the numbers you enter. Refunds, currency conversion, discounts and fee changes can all change what you actually receive.
